MT. VERNON (WMIX) – The Mt. Vernon City Council will meet tonight for their regularly scheduled meeting.
One item the council will address is a request to close North Street between 10th Street and 11th Street on April 27, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., for Central Church Serve Day.
The council will also consider a resolution to preserve revenues from food tax. Gov. JB Pritzker has called for the sales tax on groceries to be permanently abolished. The governor had temporarily suspended it as part of his 2022 budget.
During the pandemic, when the governor temporarily suspended the tax on groceries, the state reimbursed municipalities. Under this new proposal, that would not be the case.
Opponents of the measure worry how municipalities would make up that loss of revenue.
These items and others will be taken up tonight at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 1100 Main St. in Mt. Vernon.
